  • OBOB book order

    McKinley readers!

    Need something new to read?

It’s been a crazy school year, but we are still planning for 2020-2021 Battle of the Books!  If you are not familiar with OBOB, it’s a team-based competition based on close reading of a selection of books, details may be found here: https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/

If you will have a 3rd-5th grader interested in participating, the best thing to do is to start reading early.  Local Escape Fiction Bookstore routinely offers new OBOB titles for 20% off.  McKinley also makes a bulk purchase order which can allow us to access additional discounts that we use to purchase additional copies for the library or teachers’ use.  Participation in OBOB is not a requirement for ordering books.

If you would like to order with us and help get McKinley a few free books, please print the order form below, fill out and mail to McKinley OBOB, C/O Becky Tei / 2610 E. Nob Hill St SE / Salem, OR 97302 with your check payment by June 5th.  Books will be available for pickup at or near McKinley when they arrive, or contact Becky Tei to arrange a delivery.  Please make checks payable to Escape Fiction Books.

Order OBOB books here! (if you are unable to print a copy, email as an attachment to laidiebug@gmail.com

NEW!! There is now a Google Sheets version of this form if you want to skip the math. You will need to make your own copy in order to edit. Click the link and go to File/Make a copy. Then you can input the number of copies of each book you would like to order, and it will total it for you! You will still need to print and mail the form with your check when you are done.

NEW!! Use Google Sheets order form instead! (if you are unable to print a copy, email as an attachment or “share” to laidiebug@gmail.com

If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering for this year’s Battle of the Books, please contact Becky Tei at 503-407-0882 or laidiebug@gmail.com

  • McKinley Community Site

Please welcome our sister site at McKinleyMountainLions.com. This space is intended to focus on connecting the McKinley community through activities, events, social space and more! This week we kicked things off by launching a stay-at-home scavenger hunt. Head on over and send us pictures of what you find! New items will be posted every week.

The community site is a work in progress, and it will be whatever we make it — so if you have some ideas of ways we can connect the community, or you want to start or lead an activity, please let us know. You can email us at the PTC: ptcmckinley@gmail.com, or send us your email to join us in our Slack workspace to have a more detailed conversation.

Big thanks to Kevin Smith for doing the heavy lifting on this project. It’s a lot of work though, so if you or someone you know in our community has some time and a little web building experience, we’d love to share the load!

  • Usborne Book Fair

    March 9-13

Sadly, the book fair had to close early, but hopefully you were lucky enough to get a peek before it went away! Enough of you bought books that we were able to earn a few for the library. If you got a chance to stop in, let us know what you thought at PTCMcKinley@gmail.com.

  • Five Guys Fundraiser

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Five Guys Fundraiser. Together we earned $372.90 for McKinley Elementary.

We are grateful to have local merchants who support us in this way. As you can imagine, the current ban on seated dining is a hard reality for these restaurants.

If you would like to support Five Guys, you can still access take out and delivery by ordering through their website: https://order.fiveguys.com/menu/commercial/

  • Oregon Battle of the Books

Team McKinley did an amazing job at this year’s regional competition, making it into the top 8!

Congratulations to all teams on a great year and an excellent tournament. This year’s teams were the best yet! Most of next year’s titles are already posted (the final title will be decided at the state competition). Check them out on the OBOB website: https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/2020-2021-obob-book-titles/

Thank you to all who volunteered, this activity can’t happen without you. Stay tuned, we’ll start work on next year’s OBOB sooner than you think!

  • Photos!

McKinley wants your event photos! If you have taken photos you would like to share, you can now email them to McKinleyPix@gmail.com. Once they are approved by McKinley staff, you may see your photo here or on the McKinley Facebook page.

When sending us your photos, it is helpful if you include the event and the date when they were taken. If you know the names of the kids in the photos, or if they are your own children, that is helpful for us, too. We will not use the names of students when we post the photos.

  • McKinley Fun Run

The “Color Run” Fun Run was a big success!

McKinley students and parents went the extra mile this year, raising nearly $14,000! As the biggest fund raiser of the year, the Fun Run is vital in allowing us to support our elementary school in its educational and enrichment activities.

McKinley PTC would like to thank Lyndsie Taylor and all of the volunteers who helped with the Fun Run and supervised the giant inflatable obstacle course that the students earned through their efforts.

Thanks also to those who sent in these great photos. If you have photos you would like to share, please send them to McKinleypix@gmail.com!
