  • Support Us With a Donation!

Dear McKinley families and community members,

Season’s greetings from McKinley Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Club (PTC). The PTC is grateful for the contributions and sacrifices you have made in this most unusual school year.

With the season of giving upon us, please consider making a one-time donation to support McKinley Elementary School. Money that is raised pays for teachers’ classroom supplies, books for the library, gym equipment and music materials.

Will you help the PTC meet its 2020-2021 fundraising goal of $8,000 by December 31, 2020?

With the economic downturn and COVID restrictions, the PTC ceased its major fundraising events which typically raise $20,000 each year. This direct ask fundraiser replaces our annual Fun Run, Read-a-thon, and movie ticket sales fundraising events.

Did you know that you can deduct up to $300 for charitable contributions in 2020?

The CARES Act instituted a provision allowing people to deduct $300 for charitable contributions. Taxpayers can take this universal deduction no matter whether they itemize or take the standard deduction on their taxes. Deductions under the CARES Act must be in cash (including checks and credit card payments). 1

Donations are easy with PayPal or by check:

PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=ZJEF39G4QZEM4 or use PayPal QR Code:

Make checks payable to McKinley Parent Teacher Club and send to: McKinley Elementary School at 466 McGilchrist Ave SE, Salem, OR 97302.

The PTC will send you a receipt for your donation. Be sure to include your name and address when you make the payment. Thank you for supporting McKinley Elementary School!

1If a person is married and filing jointly, the deduction is still limited to $300. Because the CARES Act deduction is a universal above-the-line deduction, you can list your contribution as an adjustment to income on your taxes. In short, if you donate up to $300 in cash to a qualified organization, your adjusted gross income will be reduced up to $300. Another benefit is that you don’t need to include documentation when you file gifts $250 and under — just keep proof of cash receipts. Remember, all gifts exceeding $250 need to include the receipt or proper documentation when filing. If you have questions about deductible 2020 charitable donations, speak to a Certified Accountant or professional. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/how-the-cares-act-changes-deducting-charitable-contributions

  • McKinley Community Site

Please welcome our sister site at McKinleyMountainLions.com. This space is intended to focus on connecting the McKinley community through activities, events, social space and more! This week we kicked things off by launching a stay-at-home scavenger hunt. Head on over and send us pictures of what you find! New items will be posted every week.

The community site is a work in progress, and it will be whatever we make it — so if you have some ideas of ways we can connect the community, or you want to start or lead an activity, please let us know. You can email us at the PTC: ptcmckinley@gmail.com, or send us your email to join us in our Slack workspace to have a more detailed conversation.

Big thanks to Kevin Smith for doing the heavy lifting on this project. It’s a lot of work though, so if you or someone you know in our community has some time and a little web building experience, we’d love to share the load!

  • Oregon Battle of the Books

Team McKinley did an amazing job at this year’s regional competition, making it into the top 8!

Congratulations to all teams on a great year and an excellent tournament. This year’s teams were the best yet! Most of next year’s titles are already posted (the final title will be decided at the state competition). Check them out on the OBOB website: https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/2020-2021-obob-book-titles/

Thank you to all who volunteered, this activity can’t happen without you. Stay tuned, we’ll start work on next year’s OBOB sooner than you think!

  • Photos!

McKinley wants your event photos! If you have taken photos you would like to share, you can now email them to McKinleyPix@gmail.com. Once they are approved by McKinley staff, you may see your photo here or on the McKinley Facebook page.

When sending us your photos, it is helpful if you include the event and the date when they were taken. If you know the names of the kids in the photos, or if they are your own children, that is helpful for us, too. We will not use the names of students when we post the photos.

  • McKinley Fun Run

The “Color Run” Fun Run was a big success!

McKinley students and parents went the extra mile this year, raising nearly $14,000! As the biggest fund raiser of the year, the Fun Run is vital in allowing us to support our elementary school in its educational and enrichment activities.

McKinley PTC would like to thank Lyndsie Taylor and all of the volunteers who helped with the Fun Run and supervised the giant inflatable obstacle course that the students earned through their efforts.

Thanks also to those who sent in these great photos. If you have photos you would like to share, please send them to McKinleypix@gmail.com!
